Wheel milestone reached
New-build ‘G5’ locomotive takes shape in Shildon.
CONSTRUCTION of 0-4-4T No. 1759 by the Class G5 Steam Locomotive Company Ltd (CG5SLCL) is moving apace at the Hackworth Industrial Park, Shildon.
The long saga of the replacement wheel has finally come to an end. Contractor William Cook has cast wheel No. 4, which has been proofmachined by ADA Heavy Machining and the keyway cut in. In early April, the crank-axle wheelset was being assembled by South Devon Railway Engineering, bringing the epic saga of the crank-axle to a close – a five-year project on its own.
