“HIS GHOST IS HERE”
Kurt on the legacy of Sun Ra
Sun Ra at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, 1978
“I ALWAYS liked sitting around listening to jazz while I read, and after I read the Sun Ra biography, Space Is The Place by John Szwed, I got really deep into him. He was just a beautiful, deep person with so much to say. He’s not from Philadephia, but he stayed here until the end of his life. “Technically he went back to Birmingham, Alabama – where he was born – to die, but he stayed here for all his remaining good years. I love that his ghost is around here. I’ve played with the Arkestra a good amount of times. One of the later members, James Stewart, was in my video for ‘Like Exploding Stones’. He plays the sax on a skating rink, and he wore his Sun Ra outfit. That’s a pretty psychedelic video.”
