delicious PRODUCE AWARDS 2016

Whether it comes from fishermen, artisan sausage makers, dairy farmers or bakers, we know YOU care about the food you eat, its provenance and how it tastes. And so do we... Our inaugural Produce Awards, launched in January this year, celebrate the fact that Britain has some of the best produce in the world. Meet the winners…

As every good cook knows, fantastic ingredients are the bedrock of great cooking. At delicious., it’s part of our DNA to celebrate the best of seasonal, sustainable, home-grown produce in every issue, and on every page of our website.

For years it’s been a dream of the entire delicious. team to launch our own, carefully judged awards that are about the story, the provenance and the taste. We believe the people who put in the hard work to grow, craft and create outstanding produce need more recognition, and these awards are all about finding the nation’s best.

Working with Fisher & Paykel (see below) we invited food lovers to nominate the farmers, fishermen, butchers, growers and artisans they really rate, and for the producers themselves to tell us about their approach and their ethos.

Key to the success of the Produce Awards was recruiting judges who are experts on the food in their region. There were 27 (see right) and they did a sterling job in the regional round, assessing producers’ stories and deciding which products should be put through for the grand tasting at the final judging session held in London.

That day, it was a privilege to judge alongside Prue Leith, Theo Randall, Sophie Grigson, Peter Gordon and Ian Wild from Westminster Kingsway College (which provided the fantastic venue – thank you!). It was also nigh on impossible to narrow down so many outstanding products to just a few winners. So, really, it’s well done to everyone, but winners there have to be – and you can find out who they are on the following pages.

Sue Lawrence A writer and author of 15 cookery books, Sue trained as a journalist in Dundee and lives in Edinburgh.

NORTH EAST

Kenny Atkinson The chef at Newcastle’s Michelin-starred House of Tides has appeared on numerous BBC food shows.

Annie Stirk Annie’s career has included teaching, lecturing and broadcasting. She runs Absolutely Food PR agency.

Belinda Williams Brought up in the Yorkshire Dales where good food has been central to her life, she runs Yorkshire Provender soup company.

NORTH WEST

Simon Rogan Chef (and produce grower) at L’Enclume, the legendary restaurant with rooms in the Lake District.

Clarissa Hyman The award-winning vice president of the UK Guild of Food Writers has written books on Sicilian, Jewish and Spanish food and culture.
