We tend to think of allergies as a condition that appears in children, but an increasing number of women are ending up in A &E only to be told that they’ve developed an allergic reaction for the first time. So do we need to think again?
Mumps, measles, playing with dolls… you get to a certain stage in your life where you can feel pretty confident you’ve left them behind. Same goes for allergies: long thought of as a condition we get when we’re small and can grow out of before we’ve even finished school. And yet, adult-onset allergies are on the rise. Recent research found that 45 per cent of adults had developed one or more food allergies in adulthood. ‘Over the past decade I’ve seen an increase in the number of older adults with allergies for the first time,’ says Dr Pamela Ewan, a consultant allergist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. And it’s across the board, from reactions to food to bee and wasp stings and sensitivity to everyday medications like ibuprofen and aspirin.
