5 best backup apps & services
TO CLONE OR NOT TO CLONE?
Although every Mac comes with Apple’s Time Machine software, it’s not necessarily the best solution for backups. Third-party backup apps and services offer more options, more control over what gets backed up and when, and many also make it easy to access your data from other devices such as your iPhone. Here are some of our favourites.
Cloning used to be the easiest way to copy from Mac to Mac by making a bootable copy of an entire boot disk or SSD, but then Apple threw a security spanner in the works with macOS Big Sur. A new security feature called Sealed System Volume meant that third-party cloning tools couldn’t make bootable clones; the only way to do it was with Apple’s own rather unfriendly Apple Software Restore tool. However, Apple made changes in April 2021 with macOS 11.4, enabling our favourite cloning apps to make bootable drives once more.
