Holiday postcards are a selffulfilling cliché. The state of the weather, proximity of the beach and that inevitably false wish you were here neatly fill up the message side of the card. But for a poet, that blank square is an opportunity that can be crammed with riches.
The next Writing Magazine poetry competition gives you a chance to explore these riches and submit a poem that could have been written on a holiday postcard. Whether you are a postcard sender or not, think about the possibilities of looking at your holiday destination and reactions to it in the poet’s voice, and you may discover a whole new avenue of writing.
