An immediate or long-term view can bring different rewards, says Patrick Forsyth.
Usually, I intend these columns to provide an idea or action that may have immediate relevance. But sometimes it pays to look ahead. I don’t believe many full-time writers read this column, but some who do read it earn or aim to earn a (significant) part of their income from their writing. Peter Drucker, the management guru, offered some of the most sensible and, in a way, the simplest advice possible: If you don’t know where you are going, any road will do. Clear objectives are important, and if you want to earn money you need to decide what is most likely to do that for you, balancing that with what it is likely that you can do.
