We all come from somewhere and a sense of place is essential to most writing. The description of a house, the view from a window, or the curve of the landscape, a landmark or the plants and geology of a place tells us so much about the area and can evoke memories from our past of where home used to be. It can be a very emotive and either stir a nostalgic longing for how our lives used to be, or a sense of dread but relief that we are no longer there.
Whether a writer uses a real or made-up place, or a hybrid of the two, it’s important to get the details and the ambience correct in order to transport the reader instantly to that place in their mind. Imagery and description are key here.
