‘I had always enjoyed reading – Eric Jerome Dickey, Marlon James and E Lynn Harris are my favourite authors – but I had written little by the time I considered novel writing,’ wries subscriber Ashley Van Anderson.
‘I knew whatever I decided to write, my characters would be British minorities, in terms of race and sexuality, whether Jamaican-born or descended. This brings me to my debut novel, which I wrote under the pseudonym Ashley Joel Osma.
‘Cold Hearts, Troubled Souls follows four London millennials, each hiding secrets which threaten to destroy friendships, romances and families. Some of these troubled souls resort to twisted lengths to avoid exposure. Whether devastating truths stay hidden or not, the ensuing chaos ensures not even the cold-hearted will come out unscathed.
‘Not long before I started writing Cold Hearts, Troubled Souls in early 2015, I took a different approach to reading novels. I tagged pages with notes to highlight techniques – eg showing, not telling; utilising all the senses; maintaining deep point-of-view; establishing setting; etc.
