MY WRITING DAY
William Wall
The Irish writer tells Lynne Hackles how daily life during lockdown prompted new writing
Lynne Hackles
Prize winning writer and 2005 Man Booker Prize nominee William Wall is the author of seven novels, three collections of short stories and five poetry collections.
‘Morning is my best time for writing though I often return in the afternoon and evening to the editing process,’ he says. ‘For years I had a tightly structured day but now it’s more flexible. However, if I’m working on a novel I can spend most of the day at my desk.
‘As poet laureate of Cork I’m required to write a poem on a public theme once a month. It’s surprisingly difficult to blend my heavily ironic style with the need for public accessibility – the poems are published in the newspaper, and appear on boards in all the city parks and libraries. I’m enjoying the challenge enormously.
