FICTION FOCUS
PUBLISHING PATHS: Send to print
Margaret James looks at publishing options for writers with manuscripts ready to send out
The Fiction Focus pages in the October issue talked about the novel-writing process and outlined the various kinds of help available to authors with novels-in-progress. This feature will suggest various ways in which you might go forward once you have a finished book that you feel is ready to face the world. There are several publishing options out there, but here are the key questions you will need to ask yourself.
• Should you self-publish?
• Or should you spend months (or maybe years) querying literary agents who might not even get back to you? Let alone sign you up as a client, then offer your work to those traditional/commercial publishers who demand all submissions come via literary agencies?
• Or should you submit directly to commercial publishers who actively welcome querying from unagented authors?
