Beginning with a sound akin to someone trying to desecrate a trumpet, Severoth’s latest LP takes a few minutes to announce itself. Once the riffs thrum with Burzumic repetition and arch skyward in melodic reverie à la Alcest, however, order is restored. Five albums in five years from this prolific Ukrainian multi-instrumentalist is a lot to process, and there’s still cause to shave a few minutes off each of the lengthy compositions here, but Severoth (the man) has improved greatly as a composer over a short space of time. At his best, through synth-rich textures, Drudkh-inspired dramatic guitar progressions and heart-rending clean and screamed vocals, Severoth whips you up into a trance-like dream world of deep contemplation. ■■■■■■■■■■
