YOUNG KNIVES
LANDFILL
GADZOOKS
Last seen on Never Mind The Buzzcocks’ identity parade and naming their second post-reunion album after the Noughties indie insult, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Dartnall brothers had become defeatist. Yet their worldview stays gleefully surrealist. Yard Act have co-opted the Knives’ sharp-turn semi-spoken indie, back here on Cause & Effect, while the brothers return the favour by merging Yard Act’s synth riot on No Sound. Some songs can veer into indulgent prog whimsy, storytelling at the expense of a tune. But for unlikely singalongs, they’re hard to beat.
