The first exercise class I ever did in earnest was Pilates. My teacher was Anna at Down to Earth in Kentish Town, London. Our children were similar ages and we’d briefly console each other in the five minutes before class started. She didn’t mind if I stayed at the back and only did half the things she suggested. I was safe there; she was the one person in my life who didn’t give me a hard time.
