Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is preparing for a huge influx of skilled workers to support the new wheel-hub factory in Fort William, according to the agency’s Lochaber programme manager.
Guest speaker at Lochaber Rotary Club’s business lunch meeting on September 26 was Alastair Nicolson of HIE and son of past president Angus. Alastair delivered an upbeat presentation on HIE’s plans to make Lochaber a ‘fantastic place for people to live, work, visit, study and invest’. Following the pessimistic forecast of the future of the aluminium smelter announced by Rio Tinto in 2015, a task force was set up under the chairmanship of Fergus Ewing MSP, cabinet secretary for rural economy, to explore the prospects for Lochaber without the smelter.
