The current prison in Inverness exceeded prisoner capacity in 2018.
The Scottish justice secretary Humza Yousaf confirmed this week that the construction of a new prison in Inverness has dropped down the priority list, despite admitting continued overcrowding at HM Prison Inverness is a ‘great shame’.
This admission was made following a parliamentary question from Highlands and Islands MSP Edward Mountain, who asked whether HMP Inverness exceeded prisoner capacity in 2018.
