NOW we know the English Schools class of 2016 (see p34-44), it will be interesting to see who goes on to reach a major senior event such the European Championships (see p6-33).
As we reported in last week’s AW, the odds are stacked against them. Only seven athletes from the 2006 English Schools, for example, reached the London Olympics six years later.
But making the transition from promising youngster to successful senior is possible and since last week I’ve heard that much-needed research into teenage ‘burn-out’ is already underway with England Athletics and Exeter University quizzing 11-15-year-old endurance runners about their training habits in a study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
We’ve also tracked down the cover star of our 2006 English Schools issue, Justine Kinney, who tells us she quit because she literally could not afford to be an athlete (see Dip Finish, p82).
