Dancing Times  |  May 2020
With everyday life seemingly at a standstill, I was beginning to wonder how we could possibly fill the pages of Dancing Times this month. Although by necessity there are far fewer pages than normal in this issue, in the event it didn’t prove too onerous, as there is as much to discuss about dance during a pandemic as there is in normal times. Although you will notice COVID-19 as a recurrent thread running throughout the publication, the virus has brought up some surprising truths about our need to continue to dance, perform or to compete. Daniel Pratt offers an article on the coronavirus outbreak from his viewpoint as a professional dancer, whilst Marianka Swain takes a look at the dance that has become available online – including specialist classes and streamed performances, as well as some classic films. James Whitehead provides tips on how ballroom and Latin American dancers can stay in shape at home, and Debbie Malina contributes a timely guide on the importance on sleep. Finally, as Dancing Times approaches its 110th anniversary, I want to reassure readers we will continue to publish, both in print and online, in the coming months. During it’s history, the magazine has never missed an issue, despite the outbreak of two world wars, and the team fully intend to maintain that unbroken record. Stay safe and healthy.
