DIARY
Televison these days? Not terribly interesting, frankly. It’s crying out for something new and original. For some reason, that iconic “Nudge Nudge” sketch springs to mind. Why haven’t we seen it on any of the new sketch shows on television? Word has it that the politicians have put their feet down. It’s a distinct possibility. Comedy scares ’em. So they put a blanket ban on the “Nudge Nudge” sketch, just to save their own bacon. It’s regarded as a classic, but I’ve never heard Donald Trump referring to the “Nudge Nudge” sketch in any of his speeches. Not once. And that tells you everything that’s frightening about America today.
No doubt about it. If he were alive today, Adolf Hitler would get rid of the whole Python team, and me first. You laugh at a bloke like Hitler, it diminishes his power. The whole point of comedy is to examine everything, and Hitler hated being examined. That’s what made us so original. If the Nuremburg Rallies had featured myself and the other Pythons performing the “Nudge Nudge” sketch before Goebbels or whoever came on – well, it would have done the whole evil Nazi cause untold damage.
