REALITY CHECK
TECH bosses saw the re-election of Donald Trump as a green light to abandon efforts to tackle online misinformation, and the knock-on effect is now being felt on this side of the Atlantic.
Britain’s leading fact-checking organisation, Full Fact, which employs journalists to write free-to-read fact-checks on viral misinformation, recently announced extensive job losses. Last month Google’s philanthropic arm suddenly cut its support to the UK charity, which called the loss of the £1m funding an unprecedented threat to its work. Now around a quarter of its workforce is set to be made redundant, with 12 roles to be lost by the end of the year.
