What do I need to EAT?
No matter what your 2023 running goals are, knowing what to eat and when can make it far easier to achieve them
Words Laura Barnhouse
January is when many of us set ourselves goals for the coming year, with us runners often using the new year as an opportunity to think about how we might improve our running over the next 12 months. This is a great way to motivate ourselves towards further improving not only our running but also our health, and many of us put new training schedules in place to help us reach our goals. While having a good training schedule is vital for progressing, it is also wise to think about the ways nutrition can help achieve our goals as well. This is because eating the right things at the right times can not only help us achieve our goals, but ensure that we achieve them in the healthiest way possible.
Starting to run
If you are new to running, congratulations! You have started doing something that will bring you a great deal of joy and that will help you keep not only physically healthy, but mentally healthy too.
As far as nutrition goes for new runners, the best thing you can start to do is to pay attention to the timings of when you eat and drink both before and after you run. Some runners find they feel more energised when they eat or drink shortly before running, while others know that they need to leave a considerable amount of time between eating and running.
