AS I WAS SAYING...
WELL they’ve only gone and done it! Leigh are heading down Wembley Way for the Challenge Cup final, and I’m thrilled for everyone involved at the club, and also their fans, who are now preparing for a huge day out.
Sales of anything leopard print in the area will be rocketing as Leigh get ready to go back to the national stadium for the first time since 1971.
Quite a few folk told me I was bonkers when I predicted they would beat St Helens in the semi-finals, and even League Express called my suggestion “bold” on last week’s front cover.
But seeing what Derek Beaumont, Chris Chester and Adrian Lam have done at the club, both last season, when promotion was won so convincingly, and this, when they have really pushed on, both on and off the pitch, I just felt it was written in the stars.
And what’s more, I reckon they can go on and do what they did back in 1971 by lifting the trophy on August 12 and keeping the treble dream alive.
I always thought that if Leigh could hang in there and withstand as much of Saints’ pressure as possible, then they could go on and win, and that’s how it turned out in what was a cracking cup-tie.
