GOJIRA
The band blasted into space on their surprise single, and we can’t wait to hear about their next adventure
WORDS: ELEANOR GOODMAN
When Gojira played London’s Brixton Academy in June 2019, it felt like a victory lap. They’d already toured sixth album Magma in 2017, and now they were back at bigger venues to do it on a grander scale (including Glastonbury two days before). It didn’t matter that an idiot spilled a pint on the lighting desk, halting the flow of the show and clearly frustrating the band, who nonetheless took the mishap in their stride. The songs sounded earth-shattering. Joe Duplantier’s singing, impassioned. Brother Mario’s drumming, a blur. Guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie, creating the riffiest matter in the universe.
