Bahamas
The story of a steam locomotive
By Peter W Skellon
MANY classes of BR steam locos struggle to have a book dedicated to them, so what chance has a single locomotive? Flying Scotsman, Mallard and Duke of Gloucester spring to mind – but here we learn the incredible story of how‘Jubilee’No. 45596 Bahamas, ousted by new diesels, was saved from scrap by a friendly shedmaster and dedicated group of enthusiasts.
The reader is introduced to Stanier’s design by way of drawings and diagrams, including a full page image of‘the office’with all of the cab controls identified. Being one of the fleet built in Scotland, 14 pages are given to the North British Locomotive Co, and the Engine Record Card is reproduced in colour, full of wonderful notations.
