Meat & two opens
Historic GWR wagons to be fit for the future at Didcot.
Compiled by Gareth Evans
THE restoration of a 100-yearold GWR meat van to its former glory is a key project for members of Didcot Railway Centre’s (DRC) Carriage & Wagon (C&W) Department. Mica B No. 105860, built in 1924, has been stripped back to a bare frame and reconstruction is now well underway.
‘Mica’was the GWR telegraphic code for a refrigerated meat van with interior ice tanks – the‘B’ indicating it could be used as an ordinary ventilated van, without refrigeration if required. These vans were later designated by BR as Vent-Insul-Meat.
