M ichelle Pfeiffer gets a dream role in Azazel Jacobs’ (The Lovers) offbeat comedy, adapted from Patrick deWitt’s 2018 novel. She plays widow Frances Price, who hotfoots it to Paris with her son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and cat in tow, planning a suicide once her savings have gone. Playing out like something of a cross between Wes Anderson and Whit Stillman, Jacobs’ film is undoubtedly an acquired taste – not least when Frances’ late husband is reincarnated as her feline companion – but it delivers a deliciously quirky experience if you roll with it.
