First-time feature filmmaker Elizabeth Lo’s striking observational documentary adopts the perspectives of a selection of stray dogs roaming the streets of Istanbul. As they navigate traffic-thronged roads and sniff out food in municipal dustbins, the canines are befriended by a trio of homeless teenage Syrian refugees. Shot mostly at dog‐level height, and with a cleverly distorted sound design to imitate the hearing of its four-legged protagonists, Stray is a compassionate portrait of those existing on the margins of urban society.
