Homegrown psych-folk gold
Laura J Martin and ex- Trembling Bells singer Lavinia Blackwall first bonded at a folk festival four years ago, their shared inspirations eventually leading to an ethereal cover of Robert Wyatt’s “Free Will And Testament”, billed as Wyndow. Their first album together is an understated marvel, built around interlocking piano figures indebted to the likes of Wyatt and Philip Glass but made rapturous by misty vocal harmonies and judicious use of cello, synths, clarinet and Martin’s speciality: flute. Marco Rea and Iwan Morgan help tease out the spectral atmosphere, at its disquieting best on the spectacular “Tidal Range”.
