Charlie Grice: his powerful finish saw off the challenge of Chris O’Hare and Jake Wightman
CHARLIE GRICE and Chris O’Hare were the two athletes with the qualifying standard and they duly booked their places on the Rio team.
These two and Jake Wightman were the three in contention coming around the final bend, but Grice pulled away for victory in 3:43.11, while O’Hare (3:43.68) had to fight to hold off Wightman (3:43.90) for second.
Grice, who competed at the World Championships last year, said: “It was pretty nerve-wracking today so I’m really happy to come away with the win. It was quite a slow race but I believed in my kick as I’ve come in well prepared. I had to stay relaxed and trust myself – it didn’t really get going until 200m to go.
