We’re betting you’re well up on the health benefits of avocados, and which fitness class burns the most calories. But when it comes to the numbers that are your body’s key health indicators – the likes of blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol – are you as well informed? Nearly 1500 of you answered our Body MOT survey – here’s what you told us

You almost certainly know that October, as per every year, is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This got us thinking not only about the importance of regular breast checks, but about all the other ways we can keep an eye on our health. So, in a recent healthy survey, we asked you what you know about your body – all those numbers and measurements that can tell you so much about your wellbeing and any steps you need to take to improve it.

The great news is, you’re doing brilliantly. A huge 66 per cent of you know your BMI, and over half of you could tell us your blood pressure. You’re also good at attending routine tests – 45 per cent go for an annual eye exam, for example. But, there’s always room for improvement – so read on for easy tweaks that could make you even healthier.

Detecting breast cancer in its early stages means a good chance of recovery. So it’s heartening that 55 per cent of you have been for screening, rising to 95 per cent in those 55 and over – 50-70 year olds are automatically invited for breast cancer screening every three years under the NHS. As Lester Barr, chairman of charity Prevent Breast Cancer, explains, screening is crucial for identifying breast cancer in its earliest stages: ‘During the primary onset, many women can’t detect changes by self-exam alone. Screening can pick up life-saving warning signs of pre-cancer, too.’
