STOP THE GENDER HEALTH GAP
This summer, the House of Lords has debated vital steps to improve women’s health outcomes.
Baroness Jenkin of Kennington, committee member of the Equality Act 2010, put forward the debate which focused on the steps needed to improve women’s health and tackle the gender health gap in the UK.
The agenda included menstruation, endometriosis, social media, birth control, pregnancy, menopause, the workplace and Covid-19. The group discussed stigma around periods, the expense of sanitary products and period poverty affecting school attendance, and, in terms of female conditions like endometriosis, it was noted that women go to their GP 10 times before they get a full investigation, a sign that women’s pain is not taken seriously.
