Aim for the target
Setting targets will help you progress your writing, says Adrian Magson
I’m not normally a fan of targets. Back when I had a ‘day job’ (my current job has no such parameters – I write at all hours, even in my head) and being told I had to reach such-and-such an achievement by such-and-such a time was something that didn’t float my boat. I was lucky enough to be able to give that up years ago. Having my life divided into somebody else’s idea of achievables could only go on so long, especially when alI wanted to do was make stuff up for a living – an activity that is elastic, variable and cannot be governed by someone watching over me.
However, I soon discovered that setting your own target every now and then can be a motivator and a form of discipline, especially when you have an idea just crying out for completion.
