Beginners: Write what you want
You’re your own boss, so don’t dither, just be honest about what you really want to write, urges Adrian Magson
As fans of Disney’s Jungle Book will know, there’s a quartet of vultures who appear at one point and, with unlikely Scouse accents, ask the immortal question: ‘What shall we do?’ to which comes the spinning-wheel reply, ‘I dunno. What do you wanna do?’
I shouldn’t laugh; I’ve been through similar verbal exchanges at times, and I’m sure I’m not alone. In fact, I know it.
Who chooses?
Chief among the tribe of indecisives are writers. It’s what many spend their free time doing instead of getting down to the nitty gritty. It’s called dithering.
I should say at this point that the writers I’m really talking about are those torn between what they want to write, and what they think the market is looking for.
