Arhyming pattern can help to achieve a swifter interpretation of an image or the idea being presented. This is useful during the initial stages of writing when it is easy to feel bombarded by a clutter of ideas, words and images. During a period of revision the rhymes can be changed or even omitted. In the Italian sonnet form two sets of four rhyming words are required in the first eight lines. Sounds difficult? Try writing eight lines on a given theme, for example ‘seasons’, and note the intense concentration required. To help when writing such a form choose vocabulary that allows you the greatest possible list of alternatives. You might find that a rhyming dictionary helps.
