BEST UP BACK
Lorraine Mace learns her lesson when a computer crash threatens a work in progress
NOTES FROM THE MARGIN
Lorraine Mace
I think my work in progress is possessed. Well, I call it a work in progress because it is work and it’s definitely in progress – it has been for years. The problem is, whenever I try to get to grips with it, something catastrophic happens. The latest disaster was a computer crash.
Backing up computers is something we all know we should do on a regular basis – and I do! Well, I think about doing it. All the time. So frequently does the thought cross my mind that I somehow managed to convince myself, maybe through the magic of technological osmosis, my files and emails were safe. Starting work yet again on the dreaded novel, I discovered that thinking about backing up and actually doing the deed are two entirely different things.
