Steve Cavanagh is something of a phenomena. Not only is the Belfast man an award winning author of the acclaimed Eddie Flynn novels, of which Thirteen (Orion) is the fourth, he also practices civil rights law and has been involved in several high profile cases. No wonder Eddie Flynn is a lawyer, albeit one with something of a dark past.
Thirteen has a scenario that conjures up memories of the television hit of the 1990s, Murder One, in the way it takes on the world of celebrity. Hollywood star Robert Solomon is charged with the brutal murder of his beautiful wife. It’s the celebrity murder trial of the century and all the evidence points to Robert’s guilt. But as the trial begins, a series of sinister incidents in the court room start to raise doubts in Eddie’s mind. What if there’s more than one actor in the courtroom? What if the killer isn’t on trial? What if the killer is on the jury? The clarity of writing gives the novel a filmic quality that is born from practice.
