Say what?
Have fun with colloquialisms in this writing group exercise from Julie Phillips
Julie Phillips
There’s a saying in my locality, ‘All around the Wrekin’ – which means taking the long, convoluted, scenic route to get somewhere, (the Wrekin being a hill). There are many colloquialisms that might find their way into our writing which readers from other areas might not understand which means the message you are trying to portray in your writing will be lost in translation.
How do we identify colloquialisms that are widely known against those that no-one outside of a ten-kilometre radius would have a clue about, and how can writers use them to their best advantage? The purpose of this workshop is to help identify such sayings from all over the country and unearth their meanings, discussing when it is appropriate to use them.
