These distributions offer an opportunity to pick up some useful skills.
f the systems we’ve looked at, Gentoo offers the most insight into how a Linux system works, partially O because its systems are so basic and partially because the packages have to be compiled and configured. Package manager Portage doesn’t do as much for the user automatically as, say, apt. For example, we installed X11, but we ended up without some essential packages and couldn’t start the GUI. We had to resort to searching online to understand the meaning of the errors we were seeing. Being frank, once you’ve built a fully working Gentoo system, the other systems we’re looking at are a cinch, and that means we must have learned something useful from installing Gentoo.
