If you’re not familiar with VR terminology, lighthouse tracking is a positional tracking system for VR headsets and controllers. It tracks the movement and position of devices in 3D space with high precision.
There exists an open source, community-driven implementation of lighthouse tracking called Libsurvive. This project contains free tools and libraries that enable tracking on lighthouse and Vivebased systems, and can run on any device. It currently supports both SteamVR 1.0 and SteamVR 2.0 devices, and is also easily usable with Monado, the cross-platform, open source XR runtime. Recently, I had the pleasure of announcing an exciting new chapter for this open source tracking system as the project transitioned its ownership to Collabora’s GitHub organisation, where two people in our XR team will be official maintainers.
The previous maintainers, due to other commitments, decided to pass the torch to ensure the project continues. We are grateful for their contributions and look forward to supporting the project as much as we can.
Bringing Libsurvive into the fold is exciting, further pushing 6DoF tracking for all devices in a true, open source fashion. Catch us on the Libsurvive Discord to stay in the loop.
