Why is Scribus asking for my credit-card details?
Q
Recently you’ve recommended Scribus (
www.scribus.net
) as a replacement for Microsoft Publisher (Issue 703, page 20). You say it’s free, but when I’ve tried to download it, it asks for my credit-card details and shows a ‘free trial’ period. There’s no indication of the cost. Is this right?

A No it’s not. Scribus is completely free, so you should never need to give your credit-card details. Go to www.scribus.net and click Download at the top of the page. There are lots of versions available, but we recommend the latest stable version (1.6.3, at the time of writing). There’s a link for Windows 32bit PCs and one for 64bit. Clicking the link under the version you need takes you to SourceForge, which is a site that hosts software downloads. Here, click the green ‘Download Latest Version’ button (see screenshot below).
