What’s All the Fuss About...
JPEG XL Microsoft has made this format easier to use despite Google’s resistance
What is it?
A new image format (.jxl) that supports both lossy and lossless file compression, making it extremely versatile.
What’s the difference between lossy and lossless?
It comes down to how much image data is lost during compression. The lossy method shrinks files smaller than lossless, meaning you can store more files and share them faster, but it sacrifices some image quality in the process.
Lossless keeps files larger, but it doesn’t lose any data, preserving every detail when restoring the image.
