You may soon be able to make phone calls by satellite
What is it?
A technology that connects mobile phones to satellites so they can make calls and browse the internet. It can provide a signal in remote areas where phone masts don’t reach.
How does it work?
Your smartphone sends a signal using standard mobile frequencies (for example, 4G and 5G). This is received by a satellite which transmits the signal to a ground station that’s connected to the mobile-network infrastructure. This bypasses phone masts.
