Camera skills Shoot the moon
Making the most of photographing our own satellite
Photographing the moon against the night sky is one thing, but including foreground detail is something else. The moon reflects light from the sun so you will need an exposure of around 1/60 sec at f/11 to show lunar detail; the dark sky fools the camera into overexposing it, so use the spot meter for an accurate reading. For scenics, a correct exposure for the moon will mean an underexposed foreground; expose for the foreground and the moon will be blown out.
