UNTIL ROBOT DREAMS, Pablo Berger had stuck to live-action filmmaking (2003’s Torremolinos 73, 2012’s Blancanieves). Yet this story of a lonely dog who orders a robot companion, adapted from Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel, struck such a profound and personal chord that it made him take the leap into animation. It was worth it: in 2024, Robot Dreams became globally revered and Oscar-nominated. Speaking to Empire, Berger remembers the tears and triumphs of his whirlwind year.
