FURIOSA:A MAD MAX SAGA
THE MIGHTY WAR RIG
WORDS CHRIS HEWIYY
The War Rig in its full glory.
ONE OF THE interesting things about George Miller’s Furiosa is how it feels, for much of its running (and driving) time, so utterly unlike its much-lauded predecessor. But for the film’s third chapter, ‘The Stowaway’, Miller rides historic on the Fury Road once more, marshalling an astonishing sequence in which Furiosa (Anya TaylorJoy), squirrelled away on the War Rig as it makes its maiden run, finds herself forced to help defend it and its driver, Tom Burke’s Praetorian Jack, from marauders. Filled with inventive beats that would make even the Octoboss gasp, it’s one of the finest action sequences of the year, and here Miller tells Empire how he and his team pulled it off. Fire up the Bommy-Knocker!
THE STOWAWAY
“This sequence is character-driven. Furiosa starts off as a stowaway, and the whole sequence is a crash course in being a Road Warrior. She’s shifting her role throughout. She starts underneath the vehicle, crawls [forward], goes to the front, interacts with people, gets into the cabin at a point where all the War Boys are gone, and it’s only the two of them, and they have to help each other.”
