AGATHA ALL ALONG SHOWRUNNER JAC SCHAEFFER ON HER WITCHES’ BREW
WORDS CHRIS HEWITT
THE SHOW MAY have been called Agatha All Along, but Jac Schaeffer’s follow-up to WandaVision turned out to be much more than just a vehicle for Kathryn Hahn to show off what she could do (the answer: pretty much all of it). Around Agatha Harkness, Schaeffer constructed a witches’ coven of compelling characters, and put them through a series of terrifying trials on The Witches’ Road. Here, Schaeffer dissects them (and their ultimate fates, so beware of spoilers) exclusively for Empire…
AGATHA HARKNESS
Mind you, the final episode does very much lean into the show’s title, revealing that ‘The Ballad Of The Witches’ Road’, the song that runs through the entire season (it’s the first thing we hear, as Agatha hums it in her car), was actually created by Agatha back in the 1700s, in tandem with her poor, doomed son, Nicholas Scratch. “It was my hope that where we were going with the show was to an emotional truth for Agatha that was very private and very intimate,” says Schaeffer. “Where I started with Agatha on this show is, ‘Agatha is a liar. What is her truth?’”
