TEAMEMPIRE’S PICKS FROM THE FLAGSHIP FRENCH FESTIVAL’S PROGRAMME

ALEX GODFREY, FEATURES EDITOR
After the very brutal one-two punch of Raw and Titane, and following her Palme d’Or win for the latter, Julia Ducournau is back with Alpha. Starring Golshifteh Farahani, Tahar Rahim and newcomer Mélissa Boros, it swirls around an 11-year-old girl in the 1980s, against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic and the grassroots political group ACT UP. Ducournau never holds back, pushing boundaries, smashing barriers, and this is said to be a hugely personal film for her, so steel yourself. I can’t wait.
