THE SWING
Wilson had two years of professional golf lessons to convince as the one-time Ryder Cup star who’s traded putting for patter, smooth-talking punters into buying expensive equipment at a club. “My dad was a good golfer and both my brothers played, but I didn’t learn,” he says. “My excuse was I was left-handed and they only had righty clubs.” He studied golf legends (“I love Seve Ballesteros… such a great swashbuckler”) and watched 1996 sports romance Tin Cup (“Costner had a good swing”), but mainly he practised, practised, practised. In secret. “I went out to play with Luke [Wilson, his brother]. I was out-driving him. He was like, ‘Holy shit, I can’t believe this. I thought it was going to be like taking some kid and watching him stumble around.’”
