Spotlight makes an excellent application launcher. Just press ç+[Space bar], start typing the name of the app and press ® when it finds it.
When it comes to finding things on your Mac or beyond, you have several options. If what you’re looking for is on the web, you could, of course, use a search engine in a web browser. If it’s on your Mac, you could use the search bar in a Finder window and even create a smart folder. However, there are a couple of tools you can use to combine local and web searches: Spotlight and Siri.
