Did you pay much attention to learning a language at school?
Sure, we can tell a French person that the pen of their aunt is in the garden but for many of us that’s about it. So we’re very happy to have the Translate app on our iPhones when travelling; it knows the languages we don’t, enables us to communicate clearly and courteously with others. And even if you do know a bit of the language, the app can help fill the gaps: would you know how to ask someone in Portuguese if anybody’s handed in your child’s lost toy, a stuffed dragon with green eyes and blue wings? These are the kinds of situations that classrooms and the Duolingo app don’t tend to prepare you for.
